Longboard decks are is the part of the longboard that the rider stands on. There are certain advantages and disadvantages with each length and shape. These will come into play but depends on the focus or technique of the rider.
How Longboard Decks are Made
These decks are usually made from wood that is two millimeters thick and have two to eleven layers. These layers of the longboards are normally made from bamboo, maple, or birch. They are made commercially in a variety of sizes and shapes.
Types of Longboard Decks
- Pintails—this type of board has a teardrop shape deck that is very popular. It is suitable for beginners and is usually flat. The shape of this deck is used to provide ample foot space but at the same time, prevent the wheel from making contact with the wheel. If it does come in contact, this is called a “wheel bite.”
- Drop-deck—this is a very unique shaped deck. Where the trucks are mounted, it is lower in the middle of the deck. This can be achieved in two different ways. The first way is by having the trucks mounted through the deck using a drop through cutout. The second way is where the deck is pressed so that the truck mounts are put higher than the standing platform, which is called a dropped deck. With a lower platform, the rider has a greater stability at high speeds. Unfortunately, for loose trucks, this is not a deck that is suited for these. If you have this type of deck along with loose trucks, you could have a condition called “rail bite.” This is where the rails of the deck scrape along the ground. One hazard with this type of deck is speed bumps where the deck could impact them.
- Hybrid—this type includes wheel cutoffs. With wheel cutouts, it gives room for the wheels to turn at an angle that is sharp while being able to avoid suffering from wheel bite. This type of deck is usually just a little shorter than some of the other longboards. By being a little shorter, a rider can finish the same tricks that someone would do on a regular skateboard. There is one downside of this type of deck. Using this type of deck could cause a rider to develop the condition called “shoe bite.” This happens when a rider’s shoe rubs against the wheel, causing the rider to abruptly stop or slow down.
- Cruiser—this is classic deck shape that is similar to a normal skateboard. The similarity of the two is the kick-tail on the back of the deck.
General Information about Longboard Decks
The decks that are used for riding downhill will normally have a wheelbase around thirty inches and are usually light and stiff as they can possibly be made. There are also some decks that are made to be flexible, which riders use for lower speed riding.
In Conclusion
Before buying a longboard, you need to decide which type of longboard deck you need for the type of riding or techniques you are going to do.
